Prophet Lut (عليه السلام), known in English as Prophet Lot, was among the noble Messengers of Allah. He was raised under the guidance of his uncle, Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام), and firmly believed in his message from an early age. When people mocked and opposed Ibrahim, Lut remained steadfast, supporting him and traveling alongside him to spread Tawheed — the Oneness of Allah.
During their migration, Allah chose Lut (عليه السلام) for Prophethood and commanded him to preach to the people of Sodom, a town located near present-day Palestine and Jordan. This nation was infamous for corruption, injustice, highway robbery, and grave immorality. Allah sent Lut as a mercy, giving them an opportunity to repent and return to righteousness.
The Immorality of the People of Lut
The people of Sodom committed a sin that had never been practiced openly before them — approaching men with desire instead of women. This act was normalized, celebrated, and practiced publicly. Along with this, they committed violence, robbery, and rejected all moral restraint, making them one of the most corrupt nations in history.
“Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds?”
Surah Al-A‘raf 7:80
Prophet Lut (عليه السلام) warned them repeatedly, calling them to fear Allah and abandon their sinful ways. He made it clear that he sought no worldly reward and that his mission was purely for Allah. However, the people mocked him, threatened him with exile, and accused him of trying to impose “purity” upon them.
Rejection and Supplication
After years of sincere preaching, not a single person from Sodom accepted Islam. Even the wife of Prophet Lut (عليه السلام) remained among the disbelievers. Seeing the persistence of evil, Lut raised his hands in supplication, asking Allah for help against the corrupt people.
“My Lord, support me against the corrupting people.”
Surah Al-Ankabut 29:30
The Arrival of the Angels
Allah sent angels in human form to carry out His decree. When they entered Lut’s city, the Prophet feared for their safety due to the evil nature of his people. His wife betrayed him by informing the townsmen about the guests. Soon, the wicked people surrounded Lut’s house with sinful intentions.
Divine Punishment
When the people refused all warnings, the angels revealed their true identity. Angel Jibreel (عليه السلام) struck the aggressors, blinding them. Allah commanded Lut to leave the city at night with his believing family, without looking back. His wife was excluded, as Allah had decreed her punishment.
As dawn arrived, a terrible cry seized the city. Jibreel lifted the land and overturned it, and Allah rained down stones of baked clay upon the transgressors. The city was completely destroyed as a sign for all generations.
“Indeed, in that are signs for those who believe.”
Surah Al-Hijr 15:77
